How Our Circles Work

  • We bring people together to reach their financial goals faster. 90% of our Members get their money faster compared to saving alone, and research shows that people who save in groups are 300% more likely to hit their goal than those who save alone.

You tell us your goal, and how much you can afford each month and we’ll match you to a group of people (a Circle) with the same financial goal. Everyone pays in the same amount each month. Every month one person in the Circle is awarded the total. This repeats every month until everyone has received their total.

  • Our Circles are how we bring people together into collaborative groups, to raise money faster* together.

Tell us your goal, and how much you can afford each month

We’ll match you to a Circle or people with the same financial goal

Everyone contributes the same amount each month

Each month, one person in the Circle is randomly** allocated the total.

This repeats every month for the duration of the Circle, until everyone has received their total

** Random allocation algorithm – the randomised system that chooses which Member is credited the total each month.

  • Our Circles all work in the same way but we have two different types of Circle depending on your goal:

First Steps Circles allow you to start small and work towards any financial goal, e.g. paying off a loan, getting together an emergency fund or saving for a holiday. You can access the money as soon as you are drawn (it is paid to you within 3-5 working days).

Home Circles allow you to work towards the goal of buying your first home. These Circles start from £250 a month and help you stay focussed and disciplined on raising your property deposit. If you choose one of these Circles then when you're drawn you can only use the funds towards a property deposit. When your Circle ends, you can then access the funds and use them for any purpose.

  • No. We're here to support you to reach your financial goals whether that’s increasing your credit score, building an emergency fund or saving money to go on holiday or buy a new car. Our smaller Circles from £25 - £100 a month can be used for any financial goal, and our bigger Circles (£250+ a month) are especially for raising your property deposit. Check out the different monthly options available here.

  • We offer Circles starting from £25 a month and you can mix and match different Circles to suit your budget and financial goals. There's also a small monthly fee, which is between 2-5% of the monthly amount you are putting aside. You can see the fees for each Circle here.

  • Monthly payments are made by Direct Debit so you don’t have to remember to make your payments each month.. If there's any problem or you unexpectedly can't pay, get in touch with Peter in the Member Success Team, and he will help you work out a catch-up plan. We're here to help.

  • Yes you continue to make your payments until the end of your Circle.

  • We charge a fee so that we can provide you with an excellent, efficient and safe service. Your monthly fee includes holding your money in a secure client money account, reporting to the credit bureau and access to the support of the StepLadder Team to help you reach your financial goals.

If you join a Home Circle the fee also covers a payment waiver, which if you were to become sick or unemployed after buying a property with your StepLadder deposit would cover the cost of your remaining payments*.

    *subject to terms and conditions.

  • It’s Stepladder’s problem, not yours. We have financial measures in place that make sure the Draw continues for everyone else. You will not be affected by someone else dropping out from your Circle. You will still receive your Draw total at some time during your Circle. This is regardless of what any other Member does, as long as you continue to make your monthly payments.

  • If you join one of our smaller Circles (£25 or £100 a month) then when you are Drawn we can transfer your money straight to your bank account, or a LISA (within 3-5 business days).

If you join a Home Circle then we will release the money to your property solicitor when you're ready to buy a home. If you don't find a home, then you can access the money at the end of your Circle.

  • We get it, you potentially need a lot of money for your property deposit, but you've got to start somewhere. So even if it's just £100 a month you're putting aside to raise £1,000, that's £1,000 closer to your goal. You can combine money you raise through StepLadder with money you've saved yourself, got in a LISA or HTB ISA, or been given by your family.

  • This is the exciting bit! Every month on the 7th of the month it's Draw Day at StepLadder HQ. One Member of each Circle is selected at random (by a random allocation algorithm) to be awarded the Draw Total. You’ll be sent an email to check your Member dashboard, and then if it’s your turn you can book a call with the team. It's super exciting and you can check out some of the reactions of people when they've been told it's their turn on our IG highlights here.

  • To get started take a few minutes to complete our Apply Form - we just need a few details about you, your income and expenditure. We'll then match you to the Circles that could work for you. You choose how much you want to pay per month and complete the onboarding process, which includes a short quiz to check you understand how StepLadder works.

It takes 24 hours for us to process your application then we’ll email you when it’s time for you to come back to the platform and join your Circle.

  • No. We want to make StepLadder as accessible as possible, so have designed a "Credit Builder" status for people with lower credit scores to still be able to join. If this is you we’ll notify you at the point of signing up, but essentially there would be a delay on when you are eligible to be drawn in your Circle. Don't forget that joining a StepLadder Circle could improve your credit rating if you make your monthly payments on time, as we report your payments to the credit bureau.

  • Yes absolutely. If you can afford the same monthly payments and have similar goals, then we can put you in the same Circle. However, if you want to pay in different amounts then although we'll put you in different Circles you'll still be in the same Community and support each other along the way, celebrate when you get awarded your money and encourage each other to keep going.

If you've got a number of friends, colleagues or neighbours and you'd like to run your own bespoke Circle we can also set that up for you. Contact our fabulous Head of Marketing, Bella, and she'll be delighted to discuss what's possible. Email her here

  • We get it, it all sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?! That’s exactly what our first Members thought before they experienced the StepLadder service, the excitement of Draw Day and received their funds. Now we have over 2,000 Members who have trusted us to help them achieve their financial goals. But don’t just take our word for it, check out their independent reviews on Trustpilot - here

  • If your situation changes and you need to drop out, then we've built in a lot of flexibility for you. It depends if you've been drawn and if you've used the money to buy a house.

    1) If you haven't been awarded your money, you can drop out and any money paid in to the Circle (less fees) up to that point would be returned to you at the end of your Circle.

    2) If you have been awarded your money and it's still in your StepLadder e-wallet, you can drop out of the Circle. Any money that you've paid in to date (less fees) will be returned to you at the end of your Circle.

    3) If you've been awarded your money and taken it out of your StepLadder e-wallet you cannot drop out of the Circle as you will still owe StepLadder money. But you can pay off your existing commitment early.

Don't forget, the StepLadder Team is always on hand to discuss changes to your personal circumstances and possible solutions if you need to drop-out. We are here to help!

  • No problem. We understand that life changes. Have a look at the FAQ regarding drop outs above.
